first of all, what is your budget and what are your goals? Is it a daily driver for fun to and from work/school or a weekend racer? There are several important modifications and various engine considerations to make.

The modifications are done to the engine block. Read the 3L how-to, it will help. It's a bit outdated, but it should have pics of the "ears" that need to be removed from the block in order to mount the alternator. The EGR pipe needs to be modified, as well as the throttle cable bracket. The upper engine mount bracket needs to be ground on to fit between the 3L heads. The rest is basically rerouting vacuum lines, extending a couple sensors... minor stuff. Most everything else is swapping parts like the front cover and oil pan from the 2.5L over to the 3L.

Use the '01-03 or '04/05 Taurus/Sable engines. '01-03 is one revision, '04/05 is another. Find one with the lowest miles for the lowest price. '04/05 are going to cost more obviously becasue they are newer. The major differences between the two revisions are intake design and ignition system. Engines typically sell between $250-750 depending on year and miles.
