Hot Air Intake

I still dont get what youre telling me to get rid of... If its the Green open filter, I just installed that 2 weeks ago. If its the stock snorkle, then yeah I may be removing that eventually. I also plan to make a heat shield for the intake.

You'd be better off with the stock intake and K&N than that open element filter. At least make a heat shield for it. The stock intake is not a restriction. It sucks cooler air from outside the engine bay. Your open element is sucking hot air from the engine bay. No good for performance or mileage.

I had the stock intake with a high flow filter. I have noticed an increase in performance and a major increase in sound biggrin.gif

Funny in that you're the first person out of maybe 20 or 30 (counting probably 15 contour owners at the Carlisle show where I installed it) that has said that it's a step backwards. Everyone else says its a good mod and an improvement over the stock airbox.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I was going to point out the intake too but spridget beat me to it. Terry has discussed this many times on this forum. Search for CAI or cold air intake.
Your filter maybe less restrictive but it's definitely taking in hotter air from the hood. If you added a good heat-shield or put back the snorkel, the performance would be even better than it is now.

If Dom has the time and resources, he could prove this with actual dyno results (Sorry to put you in a spot Dom :))

Butt dyno and "sounds great" aside, you are gaining a very small percentage of power... maybe 2%. However, that goes backwards when the outside temperature goes up and your cooling fan is blasting that filter with 200+ degree air. Take a nice drive and sit in some traffic for 5 minutes with the A/C on. Then shut the motor off and use a laser thermometer to read the filter temp. I bet you your IAT and filter temps are within 10 degrees of eachother and I bet they are both 130 degrees or more.

Hardly worth it for performance. Sound on the other hand is another story.

Someone told me that the stock snorkel is restrictive and that more cold air would flow in just by removing it completely (with an open air filter). I'm confused now. The snorkel is still in place right now.

The filter in place may work very well, they are telling you to utilize the colder air thru the fender wall, which has to make sense the engine should easily produce temps 200+ so use the original shield or fab one that draws the air thru the fender. The snorkel isn't a "ram air" effect, so even if the air flow was minimal it would still be colder than the temp of the engine compartment.
I put a open element air intake(HKS Super Mega Flow) on my Rs and loved the sound it added!!but the temp of the air it pulled in probably wasn't much colder than the stock air box :(
Good Luck Rikk
Nice ride by the way!!
