PURPOSE OF THIS SUPPLEMENT

This supplement provides additional part ordering information. See Attachment II for details. A veritcal bar in the left column identifies new or revised information.

OVERVIEW:

This additional coverage program, 99M07, is being published at the same time as two similar programs, 99M06 and 99M08.

For your reference, the chart below summarizes the vehicle and component coverage for all three programs.

PROGRAM TERMS:

 

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 1995 through 1998 model year Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique vehicles built from July 1, 1995 through December 31, 1997.

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM

In some of the affected vehicles, the blower switch or resistor may develop increased resistance which could potentially prevent the blower from operating on some speeds.

ADDITIONAL COVERAGE

Effective immediately, Ford Motor Company is providing additional coverage for replacement of the blower switch, resistor and attached wire connectors. This additional coverage is provided in case the vehicle owner experiences durability concerns with these components.

This coverage exceeds the provisions of the original warranty on the affected vehicles and is automatically transferred to subsequent owners at no charge.

OWNER REFUNDS

Ford Motor will only refund for owner-paid repairs to the blower switch, resistor and attached wire connectors if made before the date of the Owner Letter (or after the date of the Owner Letter if an emergency repair was made away from the servicing dealer.)

HEATER BLOWER SWITCH, RESISTOR AND CONNECTOR REPLACEMENT

AFFECTED VEHICLES:

CERTAIN 1995-1998 MODEL YEAR CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE BUILT FROM JULY 1, 1995 THROUGH DECEMBER 31, 1997

OVERVIEW

When performing this service procedure, you will:

HEATER BLOWER SWITCH REPLACEMENT

  1. caution.gifCAUTION
    Do not use excessive force when installing the Radio Removing Tool. This may damage the retaining clips, making radio chassis removal difficult.
  2. Remove the A/C control finish panel. See Figure 1.

  3. Remove the A/C control retaining screws and remove the A/C control.
    caution.gifCAUTION
    Cut and splice only one wire at a time. The wire colors on the new blower switch connector do not match the existing wiring harness colors.
  4. Install the new blower switch connector kit.
    1. Obtain Blower Switch Connector Repair Kit # F5RZ-14A411-AA.
    2. Select the first wire to be spliced from the switch wire harness and cut it as close as possible to the blower switch connector. See Figure 2.

  5. Remove the old blower switch.
  6. Install the new blower switch.
  7. Connect the new blower switch connector to the new blower switch.
  8. Check operation of the blower motor.
  9. Install the A/C control and retaining screws.
  10. Install the A/C control finish panel.
  11. Connect the radio connectors and install the radio.
  12. Program the radio stations.

BLOWER RESISTOR REPLACEMENT

  1. Remove the right-hand upper foot well trim panel pushpins and remove the panel (if equipped).
  2. Remove the blower resistor and connector from the heater housing.

    Cut and splice only one wire at a time. The wire colors on the new blower resistor connector do not match the existing wiring harness colors.
  3. Install the new blower resistor connector kit.
    1. Obtain Blower Resistor Connector Repair Kit # F5RZ-14A411-CA.
    2. Select the first wire to be spliced from the switch wiring harness and cut it as close as possible to the blower resistor connector.
    3. Select the corresponding wire from the new blower resistor connector.
    4. Strip 1/4-inch insulation from the selected wires.
    5. Install the appropriate splice connector using Crimp Tool # AD1522 or equivalent ratchet action crimp tool.
    6. Test the integrity of all splices after crimping. Grasp the wires at each splice and pull gently. If any wire is not attached securely, replace the splice connector and crimp firmly.
    7. Repeat steps B through F for the remaining wires, one at a time.
    8. Heat each splice connector thoroughly until the tubing shrinks and adhesive flows from each end. Use Rotunda Heat Gun R07-10300 or equivalent. See Figure 6.

  4. Install the new blower resistor.
  5. Connect the new connector to the new resistor.
  6. Check operation of the blower motor.
  7. Install the right-hand upper foot well trim panel (if removed).

In some of the affected vehicles, the heater blower switch or resistor may develop increased resistance which could potentially prevent the heater blower from operating on some speeds.

WHAT WE WILL DO

Additional Coverage

Effective immediately, Ford Motor Company is providing additional coverage on the heater blower switch, resistor and attached wire connectors.

This coverage exceeds the provisions of the original warranty on your vehicle and is automatically transferred to subsequent owners at no charge.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Please keep this letter. Should you experience loss of heater blower function on some speeds during the coverage period, contact your dealer. If these components require replacement, your dealer will provide this service at no charge to you. If you should lose this letter, the dealer will still honor the provisions of this coverage.

REFUNDS

If you paid for heater blower switch, resistor or attached wire connector replacement before the date of this letter, Ford is offering a full refund. For the refund, please give your paid original receipt to your Ford or Mercury dealer. To avoid delays, do not send receipts to Ford Motor Company.

CHANGED ADDRESS OR SOLD YOUR CONTOUR OR MYSTIQUE?

Please fill out the enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us if you have changed your address or sold your vehicle.
