..I know I've covered this many times but with new owners with MTX75 trans I'll mention it again.
If you run a stoc open diff you are at RISK. The unit does not like a 'lead foot', either on take off or 'hard' driving..If you hammer it, you will break it1
1)IF you feel 'KICKBACK' thru the steering wheel on a turn chances are the diff is starting to break up/wear teeth/lost a tooth.
This is NOT the sign of a CV joint!! 2)It usually happens on either left or right turns, not both 3) NEVER,EVER..if you feel this..jack up the car and run the diff 'unloaded ' in gear!...For sure this will cause the diff to go/ BLOW ...and take a few chunks of the trans case with it!..NOT a smart way to 'check out' the diff!...i don't care what the eggspurts say...it's BS and will cost you a lot more when you 'BLOW THE CASE'...THINK!!!!!

If in doubt ASK ON THIS SITE FIRST...We have more experience with this trans here than almost anywhere on the web...Most all I read from other experts on the MTX75 is pure....bollocks! :D

Here's a pic of my stock diff after 83,000 miles with the 2.5. I'm glad I decided to get it replaced on a hunch that it could be bad!

Mine at 89,000 miles had some chewed up teeth, I don't have pics though. Luckily I sent the trans to Terry to handle the 3L, so it didn't get the chance to blow on me.

car came in yesterday with this problem. it was one of the most painfull noises from a car that I have ever heard. we just winced in pain every time it snapped as we parked the car off the flat bed. iirc this SVT has ~160k for a 2k.

Had one of those recently although at 180K.... the popping/grinding noises it made when trying to move the car in gear was very discomforting...lol.

It was more like grind grind, snap, pop, grind, grind... yuk!

current mtx is being swapped out for a know good mtx that came out of another SVT where the owner went 3L and installed an upgraded and different mtx.

based on this description I think I am in the market for a new diff. I do have a couple of questions... What else should be replaced with the diff (car has 104k on it, w/ 12k on the engine)? Can anyone give me a general estimate on cost including parts & labor? The vehicle is not modded and I do not 'drag race' away from lights but will get into the gas in on ramps and when trying to maneuver through traffic if needed. Is an upgraded recommended?

Total parts cost etc must be based on a full internal inspection etc.We have stocks of new Euro and early type stock open diffs etc.Feel free to drop me an e mail...we do quite a few MTX75s!!! Little point in changing one worn component when anther could fail a few months down the road. We inspect blockers, syncros ,bearings etc all for wear and MEASURE the parts to give a wear % age ..it's the ONLY way to inspect and MTX75..

My diff deff went bad long ago, and I have just recently had the money available to fix it. I bought a Torsen diff for 500ish but do not have a Bearing or shims to install it. What bearing, and what size shims are needed. I tried my local Ford dealer but they just told me I had 5 sizes to choose from and couldn't inform me in any way. Much respect for you Terry, it's all appreciated.

The 2 bearings can be had from a Ford dealer F7RZ-4221-AC. No way can anyone tell you the shim size, they are selective and the size is established by measurement when building up a trans. Do you have a Ford CD? as most owners who don't follow the correct process usually end up with bad results Re loose/tight bearings, failed diff/trans due to incorrect set up etc. You also need the old speedo gear from the old diff as these parts are now obsolete.

I see. Well I don't have any idea what I'm doing. The most extensive thing I have done on my car is replace my lower control arms, which was hard enough. My brother builds and takes apart Hondas but he knows nothing about Fords and also... the labor on a job like this is worth more than my car I'm sure.

l I don't have any idea what I'm doing.

In which case I would not advise you to take on this as a DIY job. A good trans shop with experience in the MTX75 is your best bet.I have seen and read too many stories of DIY jobs on an MTX75 that end in problems etc.

Here's mine at about 130,000 miles. Started getting noise from the trans, then kickback from steering, then about 20 miles later, it wouldn't move, lol.

It has a Torsen now.

i think i have a bad differential... it all started with a ticking noise from the engine compartment a few months back. then the ticks got louder and louder. searched online on what it might have been and had several mechanics look and hear and no one came closer to pin pointing it than my local pepboys. pepboys told me the ticking came from the bell housing.but thats all they knew without taking the tranny down.

as time progressed, the ticks got louder but the car still drove, shifted as normal as ever. sometime last week, while driving home from work. i noticed while driving under normal conditions, that the tranny/engine felt like it was banging like skipping gears. thinking it was a faulty suspension i recently installed, i took it back to pepboys and they told me that it was the transmission tick problem manifesting. this issue was beyond their capability so i took my csvt to my local ford dealer, thinking they might be able to help. i was dead wrong. they've had my car for 3 days and today, they told me they couldn't further diagnose my transmission because they could not locate parts for my mtx75. they claimed that if they take the tranny off, they won't be able to put it back without having the spare part. i was bewildered... i'm going to pick up my car in a few and then figure out where to take my car to have her fixed...

...sounds like your Ford dealer has no clue on MTX75's or the parts/design levels that can be used for repairs etc.
Do you feel any judder or 'kickback' thru the steering wheel ON TURNS when driving??

yes, big time kickback as if power steering was lost momentarily. i have not driven it except when the dealership had to move the car... definitely not road worthy at the moment. i had thought my car was misaligned at first when it initially started to steer weird. btw terry, i sent ya an email.
