Saving your $$'s on Trans repair.

Recommended Posts

OK, this is more of an interest posting but lets see how it goes!

Most all of our customers want 'the works' with a trans rebuild/refresh/upgrades etc. As you all know every trans that passes thru our shop is fully inspected for wear prior to build up.

Now this is fine if you need a trans for a power monster or a lot of sprited driving ,but not everyone does. We have recently built up a lot of 'basic repair' units for customers, dealers and other trans shops. No bells or whistles just inspect and renew 'basic' parts needed.

We will now offer this to anyone who just wants the trans fixed at reduced cost etc, nothing fancy.

We have large stocks of new and some part worn parts that could be used in such reapir, the choice would be yours depending on future use of the car etc.

We would also offer 'batch repairs', that is , say 2 or 3 owners all have some issue with the MTX's and would like a batch repair to all units..In such a cases we may consider a 'road trip' to pick up the units..depends upon distance etc, carry out the repairs and deliver back...

In this current economy we understand that trans repairs can run to high $$$'...

Just throwing some thoughts out there for owners...Let's have some feedback!!

Terry,

Most Contour/Cougar/Focus owners know that you're an expert with transmissions but I think it'll be a good idea if you can list the kinds of transmissions that you repair and also which car model transmissions you can repair. A website would be ideal but until you get one up and running, you can probably list them here.

There are many car owners out there who don't know what kind of transmission their car has, and I'm quite sure most people give up on their car if their transmission has issues. Even worse, they may take it to the closest 'chain' store and get ripped off.

My 2 cents.

..OK basics are ..'Anything MTX75..that includes Contour/Cougar/Focus /Jaguar X Type..all manual 5 speeds. Yes we have new website plans and also a 'firm link' for parts from UK/Germany, that includes import of parts that cannot be had in the USA. This is to be part of my trip this year to UK ..to meet with suppliers, shippers etc. Another half of the family lives in UK and will be an 'on the ground' UK source etc .

Lots of new plans for this year, parts supply direct from UK is just one..

I have a 99 mtx with a 2nd and 3rd grind. I am wanting to upgrade the shift forks, fix the syncro grinds in 2nd and 3rd, shift tower fixed so i dont have a problem with that and have a torsen lsd installed. It has 99,000 so should probly replace seals and go thru the rest of the trans while in there. What are your suggestions and what would everything cost? Thanks for your time. Tim

Hi, Terry. I sent you an email yesterday but also thought I'd try to contact you through this board in case the email didn't go through but your inbox is full!. I've had a 1999 Contour for a few years now. For the past year I have had an issue with it grinding when I shift into second gear and, just recently, it's stated grinding going into third. The car has been relegated to winter beater stats but I'd still like to keep it for as long as possible.

I did some searching online and came across your name quite a bit on several of the Ford forums. I see you are in Rockford. I am in the Grand Rapids area, too. I would love to get some feedback from you on the possibility of getting this thing fixed. Please let me know if you can help me out! Thanks!

Our quote form gives detail on pack/ship etc. basics are a Rubbermaid 'Roughneck' tote with ample packing /padding etc.Don't use Sterilite as they crack open.Dom has also shipped to us in a 'Smart Bin' from Walmart, bit larger/heavier but also seems to work...

Hi Terry

I just bought a 98 CSVT a few days ago from a guy 5 hours away. Took it for a test drive and it was alnost perfect. There was the 3rd gear grind.. a little. We got about an hour down the road and filled up with gas. When we took off the tranny felt weird. As it pulled out onto the road the car wouldn't engage any other gear including putting it back into first. As the car pulled over on the shoulder it spewed coolant all over the highway. Had it towed to a local shop there in kokomo indiana and now the shop is telling me it needs a new tranny. They want to put a used one in it but I want to know if you have any rebuilt ones around where I can send you a core back. If so how much? My wife has to drive to texas from here asap to take care of her sister who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Please give me some wisdom here with some good news.

Hey Terry, I just joined the forum, and I have a problem with my 1998 Ford Contour SVT. I got my car out of storage yesterday. It has been sitting there for about 3 months now. I took it for a ride last night, everything seemed normal. I woke up this morning, took it to get an oil change, and headed out of town with it....about 25 miles away, I got off the highway, came to a stop light...everything was still fine...downshifted fine all the way down to second gear...and I waited for the light to turn green...I put the car in first, and it ended up stalling because I thought it was in first.....So I restarted the car....attempted to put it into first gear and it was actually in third....So I stopped off the road completely and attempted to get into first, second, third, fourth....etc...all the way to reverse.....and realized it only had a third and fourth gear...even when I tried to put it into reverse...it was just in 4th....if that makes any sense... Basically this is what I mean....if I try to put it into 1st...it was in 3rd, and when I tried to go to 2nd it was actually in 4th....when I tried in 5th it was actually in 3rd and when I tried to reverse the car....it was in 4th....so basically the only gear I can even attempt to drive the car in is 3rd and 4th gear....

It is just wierd to me why this happened because it drove fine for a day and a half and then when I stopped at a stop light it all of a sudden wouldn't go into any gear other than 3rd or 4th.... If you could give me a little advice...that would be great...

...sounds like you may have an issue with the neutral cable(that is one on the side of the stick inside the car) and has the smaller black end at the trans end..Sounds like one end may have come off the trans or stick end..I'd check the cables first..

I went outside late last night and ended up finding out that that cable you are talking about did come off....Only thing is....Now I got it back on there, but I am wondering if there is supposed to be a grommet or something that will hold that cable on...because when I found it off the shaft it didn't have any clips holding it on.
