Hi guys. Hows it going? I really dislike my '96 Contour 2.0 right now :(. The clutch started slipping last week. All the parts are finally here and the trans is almost out with the exception of the shifter rod. 3 days of PB Blaster and hammering are nothing compared to 15 Michigan winters. I am ready to scrap the trans and shifter assembly. Does anyone have a complete shifter assembly or know where to get one? Thanks for having this very helpful site!

Welcome to FCO!
I know all about the shifter assembly on the rod shift transmissions..lol. Ohio here and ours get just as nasty underneath. Penetrating oil and some persistance will eventually get the end off of the transmission. I normally soak the joint down after removing the lock bolt and then after about 20 minutes give it a quick tap with a blunt chisel. They seem to come apart pretty reasonably after, some are easy than others of course.
Keep in mind that shifter and rod assy is discontinued from Ford should you damage anything. More than likely you'll be going to a junkyard if something bad happens.
Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply Dom. I have sprayed it down about 15 times in the last 3 days and hit it with a blunt punch and a 3lb. maul about a thousand times. Does the other end need to be taken down first? I am about to just scrap both the trans and shifter and replace both of them.

Lol, I hear ya. I think one of them I broke out the air hammer with a blunt end and tapped it a little. The easiest way I got the hardest to remove one apart was to actually get a big set of channel locks and twist it back and forth till it broke loose.
It will, I know it's a pain in the ass. But it beats replacing it all. You can unbolt the shifter housing and string it up with mechanics wire - That may make it easier.

Wow thanks Dom!! This whole time I assumed the shaft was splined to prevent twisting (hindsight the bolt does that DOH!). 3 minutes twisting back and forth combined with a few shots of PB and its off. Thanks your a life saver.
