so i am in the process of changing all my interior lamps to LED's. i am having a hard time getting the bayonet map led's to work. it looks and sounds like its should be a no brainer plug and play deal but i have tried two different bayonet white led's meant for 12V applications and they just wont work... i've tried turning them 180 degs to see if maybe poles were switched... nothing... all's fine when i put back the incandescents tho... wth??

Problem could be simple, test the lamp with a 9V battery to see if it even works. You could just have a dead lamp (it happens).

battery tested those led's when they didn't work and the leds are fine. could it be that a resistor is needed somehow?

Resistor? These are 12v LED's correct?

yes sir, 12v for automotive applications... i thought they would be one of the simpler plug and play mods... but i was wrong... :(

If it is for the round directional lights then you would have to change the circuit a little. I have figured it out on mine a while ago. The leds do use polarity but the light socket is powered backwards. Its wierd. Basically the contact that taps on the bottom of the bulb needs to touch the sides and vice versa. At least thats how mine ended up working.
Let me know If I am right.

you know what? that makes sense! im gonna try that this weekend! i've searched high and low online and couldn't find the cure... i will report back my findings!

btw, can you elaborate on how you set it up? where wires needed or did you just bend the contacts?

what I did was trace the metal to the source spot on the dome light. then I soldered the contactes backwards. It takes a bit of imagination but it is easy! I will put up pics if not this weekend then by next weekend. If I can. If I can not post then I will tell you whan I have them ready and you can PM me for my email. I sell leds and HIDs local here in Denver and have figured out a few tricks. I use my SVT , Jeep XJ and yes my wifes Prius as demo cars. I think Led is the way to go.

thanks in advance for when you post the pics of your setup! i'm gonna tinker with it later tonight or tomorrow. leds are definitely the light source moving into the future.... however, its taken this industry longer than expected for the lighting revolution to really take over... do you offer a solution that i can purchase should i fail at my attempts?

I did buy an extra front dome set up to work with but it is grey. I need the tan and I was going to prep it with leds and then paint the outside blk. ...But I have not yet done that. I could possibly finish it and leave it grey for you to paint if you need to. It just will not be done this week. I will try to finish it by the next week or two but I am just busy now days. I will let you know as soon as I get it done though.

robdog, your set up is correct! i was able to rig the bayonet so the bottom contact was touching the side by using some wires. was happy the leds lit up. however, after i plugged the map/dome light assembly back and flipped the switch, my #34 fuse blew. i blew that fuse 4 times and finally gave up and took down my mickey mouse rigged led map light. im gonna call it a day on the map lights and move on to something else. if you get around to making that spare map light assembly, i think i will buy that from you... anyway, glad you pointed me in the right direction! was thinking i had a defect in my led's or map light assembly...

so i think i figured this out! (with hints from a member of another forum) since the polarities are reversed in the leds, all i had to do was change the negative (black wire) and the power (orange wire) in the wiring harness. just did the switcheroo and worked like a charm! :D
