I am a new owner of a 1999 Contour SE 2.5L automatic. Unfortunately, the flywheel needs to be replaced. The oil pan also has a small leak, so I'm thinking about pulling the engine and replacing both (instead of pulling the tranny and just replacing the flywheel). Beore I decide for sure which way to go, I wanted to find out if it would be very much more difficult to pull the engine to get to the flywheel than pulling the tranny to get to it. The oil pan leak is quite small (a couple drops in my driveway overnight) and if it would be very much easier to pull the tranny instead, I would likely go that route. Any input would be appreciated as would any advice that might make the job a little easier.

Depends on the route you are pulling it out. Transmission can only come out the bottom with the subframe removed and the engine can come out by itself from the top with the subframe and transmission intact.

I'd just opt to remove the engine itself, fix your two issues and drop it back in.
