i bought a 98 contour svt with bad positive cable

battery light was on it showed 11.74 volts running less with lights on
mega fuse is good i changed it for the heck of it
ok installed new untima alternator not reman

11.74 volts running

traded it for another new (lifetime warranty)
11.74 running

battery tested fine and even checked it with another battery
any ideas? other than the alt is bad again somehow

Ok, basics here. Make sure the alternator is plugged in correctly. There should be a 3 pin black plug and a single grey plug. They both need to be fully homed (seated). If its still not charging check for power on the small red wire in the black connector. If you have power when the key is on, the alternator may be bad.

Did you have them test it before you brought it home???

deffinately plugged in correctly
i had them test the one the car came with it passed once i had already bought a new one so whatever
well the one wasnt putting out
they tested it five times good five times bad...like 11.82 volts when it was bad
i have not checked the red wire in three wire harness
does the small wire by itself send a signal for battery light?
thanks for all your help

That wire is fused and sends 12v to the regulator to turn the alternator on to charge. If its dead, there will be no charge output. Normally most people cut the wire a few inches up and put a ring end on it and attach it to the positive post on the alternator.
