Terry,
It couldn't have been a better couple of days to wander around a jy this weekend. There was absolutly nothing I needed which meant I had time to look and think. That's when I decided to grab a shift tower and see how much they were going to soak me for one...... I got a good deal and grabbed another one today before the big game....

After removing the towers I took a look at the innards to check early or late input shafts. Here is what I found:

This one is easy it looks just like your pic.

This one didn't seem to have a mark, but then I thought I could just see a faint one. Are many this hard to see?

Both of these were from 98 SE's one was real dirty in and out the other seemed to be very well taken care of. Both had ATF in them.

I'm going to get a few more then your going to need to do your keyed mod for me. There's at least 3 tours around here that need them.

...both of those look like early output shafts. The later type will have a groove dead center between the two gears, this is wher the two shrunk on gears meet.FWIW the best V6 trans for a final draive ratio change is the Cougar from 2001> 2002..Most all of these have the late type shaft and can support an FDR swap to 4.06,3.8 and 3.5. If built with the early(keyed) ally tower they make the best choice for a V6.Sounds like you have a number of towers that need the 'mod' with our key etc..!!!

Thanks for the info I'll keep an eye out for one of those Cougar trannys. The pic-n-pull sells a tranny for $130 + $30 core. I've been checking prices on stuff. I need to collect a few more but yes I'll be needing your mod soon.
