I have a 00 Mystique 2.5l that the trans decides to randomly shift in and out of overdrive. I believe its in the wiring and heres why: Replaced upper radiator hose, while I was there I made sure every electrical connector I ouldd reach was secure and cleaned them out with electrical contact cleaner, and the problem went away for about 2 months. Water pump gets replaced next and first test drive after replacement the trans starts acting up again. Is there a common issue with the cars pertaining to this issue? Any idea where I should start looking first? The OD light never flashes when this happens and there isnt any codes stored. TIA!

You probably need to explain more? but I don't know if it would be the "transmission range sensor" / Neutral safety switch.

FYI On my 1999 contour 2.5L I had a trans-like problem similar. While driving (more when it was wet out as moisture seems to effect it) engine seemed to overrev/slip out of gear while driving and bunk. These posts guided me to this sensor. I bought for under 30 bucks the part and changed it and luck have it prob went away ! (it's PITA to change .... under the battery on the left. on top on trans. good luck.

I am having this same problem. I picked up the part that drej mentioned above, but I also had to buy a new wiring harnedd for it, b/c ford changed the style of plug on the sensor. So the parts guy at the dealership said i'll have to solder this new wiring harness in so I'll then be able to plug it into the new "transmission range sensor". I'm dreading doing this and am thinking I may let my mechanic handle it.

Well, I finally got around to replacing the transmission range sensor.  Seems to have solved the problem.  HOWEVER, the parts guy @ the dealership lied to me (or his computer lied to him) because the new sensor plugged right into the harness that was already in the car.  So i wasted like $40-something on a new harness plug and some heat shrink tubing!!!  Oh well, it least the trans issue got resolved.  Just thought this might help someone else out in the future.
