  1. Name: Ford Contour GL (1996) Date Added: 14 October 2006 - 06:48 PM Owner: iringtwyce Short Description: It is an ATX Zetec w/ a wiring harness problem. I bought the car to run in the BA2BE rally in May. That's the Big Apple to Big Easy rally. The car you enter cannot cost more than $250 to purchase. I found this little treasure two blocks from my house. The harness has been replaced, still tracking down problems keeping it from starting. View Vehicle
  2. Name: Ford Contour SE (1998) Date Added: 11 March 2006 - 11:20 PM Owner: iringtwyce Short Description: I bought this car new in September of 1998 in Raytown, MO. My first brand new car purchase, and now she's paid for. Thanks to a having a number of work vehicles that I also drive, I've kept the mileage down. Currently I'm at about 52K. Not bad for an 8 year old car. She's pretty much stock at this point. View Vehicle
  3. Welcome! Good to see you over here too! Tons of good technical info here.
  4. Don't forget to keep an eye on ebay. I remember about ½ a year back there was a guy trying to unload tan leather seats from a Contour. No one bid on them for 3 seperate auctions. Don't know if he ever sold them, but they weren't unreasonable. I probaby would have taken them, but none of my cars have tan interiors.
  5. I realize this won't help you, since you have a '99, but www.zxtuner.com shows both CF and fiberglass hoods as being available for pre-98s. The CF are something like $450 shipped, the fiberglass about a c-note cheaper. I have no idea if they still stock these, but they're still on the website.
  6. Can anyone tell me the proper torque for the valve cover bolts??
  7. Great! One question though...the O-ring/plug bore seal. Are we just talking about the washers that the spark plugs sometimes come with, or do I need to be looking for a specific O-ring, or is this something I don't need to worry about at all? I'll definitely be picking up a gasket for the cover ASAP!
  8. I have been rewiring a '96 ATX Zetec I picked up for $200. Got the wiring harness sorted out (pretty sure anyway). Still wouldn't start, so I figured I'd go ahead and change the plugs. Pulled the first two, only to find them completely covered and dripping with oil, all the way up the threads. Cyls. 3 & 4 were nice and dry. Shining a light down into 1 & 2, I can see the oil pooled in the cylinder. I'm guessing (and hoping) this is probably just a failed valve cover gasket. I found a thread that suggests a new gasket and "plug bore seals (like o-rings)." I have never heard of plug bore seals. What would I specifically ask for at Autozone (re plug bore seals) so that I get what I need? Has anyone else had this problem? How is the best way to get the oil OUT of the two cylinders once I've gone to put on the new gasket? Should I try sticking a rag or paper towel down the plug hole and soak up what I can? Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated!
  9. Sounds like the car dealer is an ass. Sure, as with anything you'll have some that are put together better than others. I bought my '98 brand new. Other than the Ford recalls and a new battery, I have not had to do anything to this car. I have only had one CEL in the eight years I have had the car. It was for a gummed up O2 sensor. Ran some cleaner and a couple of tanks of high-octane gas through it and it cleared up the problem. IMO, the Contour (and ESPECIALLY the SVT) is the single-best used car value out there right now. For pocket change you get a reasonably powerful car that handles like a $35,000 German Autobahn cruiser. Keep the SVT, most especially since you've got a Tropic Green one.
  10. Is that the Amish version of "Smith" or "Johnson?"
  11. Man, that sucks! Were these wild dogs, or did some ass let their pets run loose? What was the final $$ total on the damage?
  12. I recently registered for the BA2BE (Big Apple to the Big Easy) rally. It's a four day rally, with the major rule being your car cannot cost you more than $250 (must be documented). I have a 1980 Fiat X1/9 I bought for parts a couple of years ago for $240 that I considered using, but two blocks from my house was a '96 Contour GL (ATX, Zetec) that had been sitting for about 3-4 months. A couple of calls and a couple of days later, the car was mine for $200. It apparently has the 99m03 wiring harness issue, and is 21,000 miles over the cut-off for warranty. Brand new tires (less than 100 miles) and a recent timing belt change. The car is in remarkably good shape considering the hard life it has had. Interior and upholstery is good, could use some new carpet. So, now I have about 6 months to get the car running and reliable. It's going to be over 3000 miles, as I have to drive from Texas to New York, just so I can drive from New York to New Orleans (then back to Texas)! If the car holds up well and makes the trip without major incident, I'll be keeping her and modding and restoring her. If she craps out along the way, well, I'll be taking the title with me just in case she needs to be scrapped!
  13. Or you could have a sheet metal screw in your tire like I did!
  14. It's not my cup 'o tea, but it looks like you're doing quality work. Keep it up!
  15. OK...so the LIM I can't use from my parts car, but I should be OK using the UIM. At least, that's how I read it. Thanks for the info!
