Focus Towers DO fail....

Recommended Posts

...well from pics that Jezter has sent me it's clear that his lever/shaft weld has broken in the exact same place as the other one!! This is NOT GOOD and it 'appears' from these starting to go ,that we could draw two conclusions..

*Ford moved on from this design to the later/current style of tower with a 'quadrant' lever on the top Vs the 'lever & weight' on the rear...wonder why!!!

*If you have have early type ally tower with 'The Bolt'..KEEP IT...and just have us carry out the 'Keyed Tower' mod and you will be set.

With the list growing of issues with the later Focus style tower( with or without the 'ball' cable ends ) we now have...'broken roll pin'(loss of gears), broken spot welds on internal shifter arm (loss of gears), broken weld on shift lever to X shaft (lost gears) and the ongoing issue of , if you use a 'ball end' style and need a whole new cable assy your new cable will NOT accept the Focus ball type cable ends.

Seems even more weight to ..

*Stay with the early tower.

*Have it keyed by us.

*Stay with 'pin end' type cable ends.

...and another one bites the dust! Below another shift lever that has let go on it's 4 spot welds result, no gear.As I have said the part with the hole that takes the roll pin is on the left, that part is spot welded to the part on the right which engages into the shift forks. If the welds go then no drive gets to the lever and the forks..no gears. On a keyed mod on this type BOTH sections of the assy are locked together, neither the roll pin or the spot welds take and load from shaft rotation to engage gears...No broken welds, no broken roll pin..BUT as we have seen, other parts fail on the late Focus type tower, such as the welds where the levers are welded to the shafts..Best bet , stick with an early style tower and have it 'keyed' by us...and forget it...no worries!..

I have yet to see ANY of our 'Keyed Tower' modded units fail. For the key to loose drive to the shifter lever then the lever assy, early (bolt type) or late (as in the pic) would have to crack wide open..NOT going to happen with our design, got he math right on this one!!!
