"SUBWOOFER TRUNK INSTALL---PICTURES"

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I just mounted my subwoofer in the trunk of my contour. I thought i would pass on some advice on how to do it yourself, and end up with a trunk that is still totally functional, looks great, and is a safe place to mount your sub and allow it to perform to its true potential.( I DOWN LOADED PICTURES. IF THEY ARE NOT INCLUDED, I WILL KEEP TRYING)

I wanted to be able to still use my spare tire, and get to it with relative ease. Some guys would ditch the tire and use the space to put in a sub, or amps. But if i get a flat, and am on the side of the road, I want to change the tire right then and there. You will need a jig saw, cutting saw, drill, vacume cleaner, sheet of 3/4" mdf, some 2x4's, spray adhesive(glue) and "patience".

As you can see i took out the flimsy trunk cover. But d'ont throw it out. You can re-use the carpet. You will also need it to act as a template to trace out the side trunk "mudflaps" and the rear tail section. I started by runninng some 36" lengths of 2x4's horizontally across the trunk, and screwed them in. Be careful not to screw into anything such as wires, lines ect. When you get to the last 2x4 that is going across the spare tire opening,STOP. before you screw in that last piece make sure you can get out the spare tire. Then screw it in. I left only enough clearance for the tire rubber to get by the 2x4.

Now you can lay down a sheet of 3/4" mdf over top of the 2x4's, and screw that in place. Cut out a piece of approx. 22.5" by 37.5". This will give your sub box a strong platform to rest on, and w'ont be moving around. note that i have my sub pointing towarsd the back of the car and not into the cabin. This will maximise bass response. Now you can move onto covering up the spart tire. Cut 2 pieces of 2x4. 15" in length. Put one on either side of the spare tire opening running vertically, as shown in the pictures, and screw into place. MAKE SURE TO RUN THE TRUNK RELEASE CABLE AND WIRING around the side of the 2x4 before screwing into place.

Now cut a sheet of 3/4" mdf and place over the spare tire opening. You will need a piece approx. 18" by 37.5". The outer edges of this piece will rest on top of the 2x4's. No need to screw this down. You will need to shape the end of the sheet that goes up against the tail section of the trunk.

Now you can do the side trunk flaps. Take the original flaps that came with the car and cut them off. Trace them out onto a piece of 3/4" mdf and cut out. Now try to put them in the trunk. You will see that they are too big. Take your jig saw and trim these pieces down until they will fit between the spare tire sheet cover, and the side of the trunk. When they will fit, place a small piece of 2x4 underneath them. Screw the 2x4 into place, then screw the mud flaps into the 2x4's.

Now you have everything in place .Once you are happy with the fit, Take off all the pieces of mdf. You should be able to re-use the old carpeting that came with the cars priginal trunk lid. Use some spray adhesive and place the carpeting over the pieces of mdf. Once dried, trim off the excess carpet. Reinstall the pieces.

As you can see in the pictures I added a piece of trim on the front of the subwoofer platform. Also MAKE SURE TO BRACE THE SUB ENCLOSURE, as shown in the picture. This will keep the enclosure from moving around and allows for maximum bass energy. Also i made a handle fot the spare tire lid.

Yup. 3 10s or 1 kick ass 15 being driven by 800- 1000 watts rms. That's my next move. Ditch this 1 12 and get a 15. Something that will give me a real "good back massage" and make my eye balls vibrate!

Nice info.

When I bought my Escort GT back in high school, I did something similar; a little more room though with the hatch. Front hinged floor (3/4" MDF) with two 12" RF Powers, a Punch 200 and Punch 4080. All wiring concealed under the floor. Works well. Only had to use the spare once in 14 years!

I would like to get rid of the spare tire all togeather. But with my luck i would get a flat out in the middle of nowhere, not have enough money on me for a tow, or forget to bring my cell phone, and have to leave the car for help and come back to find it up up on blocks , and the stereo gone. I had a "punch 40" and "punch 4040" years ago. They d'ont make them like that any more. Great amps.

Upgrading ALT wires ect..? I have a 220 amp ALT and I did but when my engine blew it pretty much coated alot of my underhood with oil.Not really the greatest thing for electrical. You can see my trunk setup in my pics.If there are any issues I am sure Stage 3 will notify me,can't wait less than 3 weeks until I can go pick the beast up and the cruise 2451 miles back. There is nothing like 1400 miles of pretty much open ,unpopulated Highways and Biways.

I just checked out your pics. Looks neat, clean and organized.Looks good. I like how you have your amps mounted. Did you find the dynamat on your trunk lid helped in any way that was really noticable? Was it worth the money?

Yeah dynamat is probably the best invstment you can ever make for a car that is pushing 1000w +.For 15.99 for the LP holder, that was a steal.Got rid of alot of rattle.I also used Dynaliner under all the plastic in the back.I think it well worth the price.I think you canstill score trunk kits for relatively fair price 49.99-89.99,that was more than enough. Also look into the new spray on.

Thanks. I will do up my trunk lid as you have done. I will get some also for my license plate as well. As far as the spare tire cavity and the rest of the space under the lids, i might just pack it with insulation. "poor man's dynamat".

I am not sure if Fry's electronics is out your way,but the LP kit is 15.99 when it is on sale.It will almost completely eliminate LP rattle,I used everything from cardboard to lining the back of the LP with rubber.Nothing worked as well as the dynamat.

Have you figured out a way to stop the third brakelight from losing bulbs? I am thinking about going LED,but interior will be the last place I focus my atention to right now.

Am not really concerned about the third brake light, As long as the tail light bulbs keep working.D'ont need an excuse for the cops to pull me over! :o

SVTDEMON,

Did you do anything to your rear deck? I want to cut out the "speaker hole" and also drill a bunch of holes in the rear deck to help the bass fill the cabin.
