ric Posted May 3, 2007 Share Posted May 3, 2007 Had the the MTX in my 97 Contour swapped w/ a 95 from a "Recycle Yard" (both rod). Now the shifter in 5 & R is off. The neutral position between 5&R is a bit forward of the 1-4 neutral position & I need to pull up on the lock-out to get into & out of 5th. Is this due to some adjustment in the rods? or a problem in the "new" MTX? Is there something that can be adjusted or get another MTX? Thanks? Terry Haines Posted May 3, 2007 Share Posted May 3, 2007 ....OK,this is a rod shift(95>97) so we have another set of issues.1)The trans /engine assy MUST be located'by the book' on the mounts and roll restrictors. 2)The stab bracket and arm from the shifter assy(not the shift rod itself) must be correctly attached to the r/r bracket. 3)The 'tail' mounting of the gear lever shifter box must be free to slide in its mount(they rust up).4)Check thes first before you even attempt to play with any adjustment.It has been my experience that one or more of these things will cause the issue you discribe.It is VERY rare that the rod length needs any adjustment. Terry Haines Posted May 3, 2007 Share Posted May 3, 2007 This is the rod shfter box mounted under the floor to which the 'stick' goes into(a bottom view)You will note the small hole in the center of the housing .The componet on the left is the part that the stick sits into,this is inside the box.Not the small hole just back from the lage 'shift stick' hole.There is a special 'pin' that can be inserted thru the box to engage in the small hole.This pin will check/set the rod in the correct(neutral) position for it to be connected to the trans(which also has to be in the neutral position).The box rear mount,which must slide,is the red Si rubber part you see,it has 2 bolts but must be free to slide on the square section shaft that is on the shift box.....Most all this info is on the 95>97 Ford Cd. spridget Posted May 3, 2007 Share Posted May 3, 2007 I was having a similar problem on my '98 SVT. When I purchased it, the previous owner had replaced the original transmission with one from a '00 Cougar. I had to use the reverse lock out to engage 5th.
