I have a 98 contour with the v6. I replaced the coolant tank with one that only has 1 small and 1 large connection, where my original one had 2 small and 1 large. Question is would it be ok to Y connect the 2 smaller hozes into the one inlet? Or maby just block one hoze off. I noticed one of the hozes come off of the engine return to radiator(top) hoze, not sure the reason for this connection at this location.
Thanks,

People with tranny issues should look at this rebuild method.

I have a 1998 contour with the 2.5L and CD4E tranny. The plug that attaches to the tranny from the wiring harness just to the right of the nuetral safety switch (as viewing from the front of the car) I think is for the Shift Solenoids, needs replaced. Anyone know where I can find a replacement plug that I can splice into the existing harness?
thanks,

I have a 98 Contour LX with the 2.5L auto and would like to know what vehicles I can use parts from. I read here that the mystique and cougar are the same cars, any other donors out there? Also understand there was a 1998 and a 1998 1/2 model, what changes were made and how do I tell which I have? What Cougar and Mystique forums are good places for info?
Thanks,

This nuetral safety switch is bugging me. If its only purpose is to keep the car from starting except in the P or N positions, how is it effecting the tranny shifting?

When replacing the nuetral safety switch the notch on the inner ring of the switch, the part that moves, was lined up with the D that is stamped on the black part (the large part that does not move). The tranny was in park, should the tranny been in drive to match the safety switch instead of park? Also the switch has some adjustment in it, what changes as you move it to the right or left of center position?

I replaced my trans range sensor and it appears the funky up and down shifting ect has gone away. I noticed when removing the old one that the shaft from the tranny and the switch hub had become out of line??? At least not synced up with the grooves that sync them togther. I think my switch was still good and the plastic vertical bars that hold the alignment with the tranny shaft just sheared. As I was installing the new switch I noticed how soft these plastic bars??? are, or whatever you call them, causing me to believe that you should check this first and maby come up with a way to cause it to hold alignment when stripped, and many of these switch replacements might be not completely necessary.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to track down my hard shifting and sudden uneeded downshifts my 1998 contour 2.5l v6 auto is doing. I disconnected the sensor that is located at the end of the tranny behind the drivers side wheel well and it seems to have no effect on anything, I thought this was the vss and could be causing the hard shifts but maby not. Where do I find the MLP sensor and see if that may be the problem. The tranny works well up until the motor gets warm, the warmer it gets the harsher the tranny is acting. Any suggestions on what to check out?
tranny was rebuilt about a year and half ago and has about 12000 miles on the rebuild. They probally didnt replace any sensors. But I dont know for sure.
Thank you,

I have a 1998 contour 2.5l auto that is acting the same, have read where it might be the VSS sensor. is this the same as the trans range sensor (or MLP)?

Head Gasket Leaking Water?
in Under the Hood
Posted
Been having overheating problems and coolant dissappearing, not leaking just vanishing. No water in the oil or oil in the water that I can see, thinking it must be a bad head gasket and its steaming away. Anyway would a compression test or is there another way to tell what bank the bad gasket is on? NE1 had any luck with the head gasket repair in a bottle products? And is there any diff/advantage to replacing my 2.5l duratec heads with the SVT heads and will they even fit? If anyone has a diagram os similar that shows the coolant flow of this engine I would sure like to see it. It's confusing to me the way this engine is plumbed up for flow especially around the thermostat housing area.
PS does anyone have a fried solenoid pack from a CD4E tranny. I just need the plug and pigtail off of it.
