High Mount Brake Lamp

Hey everyone,

I've got a 97 Contour that has most of the bulbs in the high mount brake lamp burnt out. When I remove the cover and access each individual bulb I cannot pull the bulb out of the black socket it's in. The sockets come out of the fixed assembly but the bulbs don't come out of the sockets. Do I need to replace the black sockets with the bulbs? Can't find these anywhere... but it seems that I can find the bulbs at a local auto store (although they're not 2723)... Any ideas??

Thanks!

Take an electric continuity tester (or 12V battery + wires) to the junkyard. Climb in the back seat of a dead Contour or Mystique (anyone know of another car; Cougar maybe?) and pull off the cover of the high-mounted brake light. Twist and pull out the black socket assembly for each bulb. Put the two probes or wires on each of the metal prongs and test if the bulb is good. Take the handfull of "good" little bulbs, look pitiful, and give the "automobile salvage specialist" $1 - $5 depending on how pitiful you can look.

bulbs do come out...you have to twist slightly and pull......replacement number is 2723...are they dipped bulbs?

What do you mean by "dipped bulbs"?

do they look like they have been dipped in chrome halfway up? If so, you will have to go to a junkyard or a dealer to get them....most auto parts store don't carry the "dipped" bulbs. Otherwise, the standard 5 watt replacement will do. ps, performance wise, they are essentially the same bulb.....the only difference will be the brightness.

Thanks for the tips! I was able to remove one... took some time to loosen it but it finally popped out. Have you had any luck in sourcing these bulbs out (other than a junkyard)?

If it were me, I would just go to a junkyard. Take an ohmmeter with you and a five dollar bill and grab a handful. If my memory serves me right, it should take 9 bulbs. When I replaced mine a few years back I had a hard time finding them at a parts store.....I eventually found them at pepboys.....2 or 3 bucks for 2 of them.
